Biking Vacations and Hot Spots in the Central USA
In an attempt to offer some insight into the many awesome biking trails this country has to offer, I’ve narrowed down my 5 favorites in the Central areas of the USA. While there are so many to choose from, I’m hoping my humble opinions below will help you get the most out of your ride.
Waldo Canyon, CO. With literal breathtaking views , especially from the top, this trail doesn’t disappoint. At the apex of the ride you will be above the tree line, which is especially unique. There are few rides in this country where you get the feeling that you could touch Heaven itself. The downward ride is memorable and fun as well.
Palmer Park, Colorado Springs, CO. Colorado Springs is a personal favorite so I may be a bit biased about the trails here. Palmer Park offers many trails from beginner to expert. There is an added adventure element as well. There is no discernible way to navigate the park because the maps are incomplete, so you could get lost for a little while, but it is totally worth it. The rock formations impress every time.
Wyoming, Jackson. The Cache Creek to Game Creek Loop is a little southeast of Jackson. At the start it will seem a bit elementary and common. About 2 miles in you will start to realize how special this trail is. This varied plants, vegetation and wildlife that inhabit this trail make each ride through it a new discovery. As far as skill level goes, this trail will work for everybody but it a little more challenging if you do it backwards. For one of the most beautiful rides in the world, check out this trail.
MOAB brand trails, Moab UT. The MOAB brand trails are 4 tracks all named for letters in the name MOAB. M is the easiest and B is the most difficult. There is something for everyone and the trails offer everything from fun and rocky to slick rock with hairpin turns. Moab is a beautiful area to begin with and it definitely has the sense that it was designed with biking in mind.
Barton Creek Greenbelt, Austin TX. Few biking enthusiasts will argue that this trail is the best Texas has to offer. Austin is a great city with its live music scene, great food and atmosphere. If you want a little more nature and a little less urban, Barton Creek is the ride for you. This ride is inconsistent to say the least, even experienced bikers may find themselves walking in places. There is a single track on either side of Barton Creek, but there are stretches where there is no track at all. Despite its inconsistencies the ride is worth it.
Above are five excellent places to begin your exploration of Central US bike trails. Admittedly these trails kind of hug the edges of the Central US. I do like to have some elevation change in my bike trails and the bread basket doesn’t really provide you with that. These trails will keep you busy though, and happy with your bike riding if you dare to try to take them on.
Pink BMX – advice on buying a Pink BMX
How to Shop First things first: Who will be riding the BMX bicycle? How important is a brand name? How long will Junior ride this BMX bike before he graduates to a mountain bike, or loses interest altogether and picks up a skateboard?
Be careful even with more expensive BMX bicycles, the price can be inflated for a fashionable bike or one that’s endorsed by a popular pro rider, even though it may not offer any better features or construction than a cheaper model. Differentiation of quality among brands, especially advertising and certain salespeople would have you believe. Particularly true of cheaper BMX bikes, many of which are made in the same factories overseas and then painted with different companies’ logos. Much of the purchasing decision will come down to you or your child’s riding preference, their need to follow fashion, and of course, the amount you are willing to pay.
A Good BMX Feature: They usually feature 36-spoke wheels and should come equipped with knobby tires for better traction. On a dirt.racing BMX bicycles usually require only single, rear wheel brakes. Depending on the type of BMX riding you’re interested in, BMX racing bikes need to be lightweight as well as rugged.
Freestyle BMX bikes, on the other hand, are ridden on the street so you’ll want smooth tires and 48-spoke wheels for increased strength. The handlebars should be able to spin 360 degrees and the frame should have 2 or 4 axle pegs for supporting the rider while he or she performs freestyle tricks. A freestyle BMX bicycle should have brakes on the front wheel as well as the rear, along with special stunt components such as cable detanglers so the cables don’t break or become knotted when you spin the handlebars in mid-air.
These bikes usually feature heavier duty frames and axles as well, with reinforced gussets in order to withstand the heavy landings from huge air jumps. BMX dirt-jumping bikes also need 48-spoke wheels, but with knobby rather than smooth tires, again for maintaining a good grip on dirt-jumping mounds. Like a racing BMX bicycle, a dirt jumping bike will only need a single, rear wheel brake.
How about Extra Kit ? Young kids and beginners should only ride within their skill and experience levels. Any rider will need a safety helmet, elbow and knee pad, especially those involved in freestyle riding and dirt jumping. You should tell your children that tricks and stunts performed on telly are by undertaken by skilled riders.
The Size does it matter? As your childs riding style changes or they grow, you might need to buy a longer seat post or adjust the handle bars to accommodate those changes. Unless you are shopping for a very young child, there are usually only minor variations in the size of a BMX bicycle frame. Variations that reflect the riding style of a rider rather than they body size.
To Department Shop or to Buy Local It is worth bearing in mind that buying a BMX bicycle from a department store rather than a specialist bike shop may not provide you with the follow-up replacement parts you may need in the future. Your local bicycle shop will likely not only offer the most helpful advice during the shopping process, but after you’ve made your purchase, they’ll also be there with mechanical support as well. A bigger selection will mean better choices, better deals, and salespeople who ride BMX bikes themselves.
When to Buy If you can wait until fall or winter when sales dip you are more likely to pick up a bargain deal from a shop that is eager to sell the older model BMX bicycles to make way for the next year’s model. As with other types of bikes, getting the best deal when purchasing a BMX bicycle is not just about knowing how to shop, but also when to shop. BMX bicycle prices can vary throughout the year, with the most popular time to buy a new BMX bike being the spring or summer.
Andrew Histon has been messing about with Pink BMX since his teens. You may see many of his articles around the internet. When not writing articles he is busy in the garage.

Parents, Children Benefit From Lowrider Bikes
In the never-ending search for a perfect exercise/recreation vehicle, parents often turn to such unique items as jogging strollers and low rider bikes, for the purpose of including youngsters in the daily activity. Why low rider bikes and jogging strollers?
Running/Riding Parents
Let’s look at the needs of a parent who wants to take a young one along for the ride (or run). Some parents know that they will continue running as recreation and exercise even after they have children. In order to do this safely it is often necessary to find specialty equipment. A jogging stroller is certainly one method of including family members. Specially designed bikes that can accommodate small children are also on the priority list for many parents.
Necessity is the mother of invention. As marketing pros in this business know, young mothers needed a way to take their toddlers along when continuing a life-long habit of jogging for exercise and health. Putting on running clothes and those special shoes again after the birth of a child means a lot to young parents, but many of these folks don’t have the option of leaving the child with someone, however safe that choice might be. Enter the jogging stroller and the low rider bikes that can be perfect for this situation. With this relatively new equipment, moms could reassert their independence, get away from home for a while and include the new baby in a healthy outdoor activity. (New fathers have taken to this method of exercise quite well, according to industry figures.) Even the dog can get into the act.
How Much Do I Spend?
First of all, these strollers may be a bit more expensive than another type of infant/child stroller. Low rider bikes don’t have to be so costly, because the parents of a new baby or toddler will not be looking for the custom-designed “hot rod” bike that many think of when low rider bikes are considered.
Trying to save money at this point is not a good idea. Solid construction and durability are key. For a stroller, plan to spend $300 to $500 dollars. The extra cost will be worth it in the long run. A quality low rider trike may cost $500 or more, but many of these include a love seat or rumble seat with safety belts (ideal for taking the youngsters along).
There is also a secondary/used market for strollers and specialty bikes. Garage sales, newspaper classifieds and Web trader sites are good places to buy these items without breaking the bank.
