Golf is a game that can be a great joy or it can drive you stark raving mad. It can take years of your life or make you feel like you’re on cloud nine. Golf takes patience and armed with a good swing, it can take you a long way. While the objective of the game is easy, hit a ball really hard into a hole on the other side of the fairway, it’s easier said than done. Innumerable duffers have become overwhelmed by utter frustration because of golf. In reality, it really isn’t all that bad.

Keep it Simple… Practice, Practice, Practice

Golf is a game of consistency. Hitting the ball the same way, given a specific situation, is key to achieving good scores. Problems such as short drive distance, slicing, hooking and other golfing ailments are caused by a lack of consistency. Learning how to properly swing a golf club ought to be simple enough as long as you learn how to do it right from the start and practice.

Each golfer develops their own distinctive style when swinging a golf club, however all golfers use the same set of rudimentary rules that make up their swing. The golfer’s spine acts as a rotating axis while the golfer keeps a proper grip on the golf club accelerating through the impact of the ball to full follow through.

Conserving Energy

Eliminating unnecessary movements incorporated in your golf swing is by far one of the best things you can do. Consider it conserving energy. Your energy should be focused on striking the ball and any added awkward motions can cause hooking, slicing or other problems.

Concentrate on the fundamentals keeping only the motions needed to hit the ball dead on center. Focusing on the fundamentals of the swing will lead you to a lower handicap in short order. With added practice, achieving par golf will become a matter of routine. Keep in mind this will only happen if you consistently practice.

Getting Formal Instruction

Learning how to properly swing a golf club may be accomplished by signing up for golf lessons administered by a local golf pro. Typical classes offered by local golf courses also provide clubs and trained teachers that are equipped to help you develop a proper swing. You need to show up with your determination and discipline coupled with lots of practice.

Signing up for lessons typically requires a fee, however many golfing organizations want to encourage the development of new golfers into the sport and they may offer money saving promotions to entice people to try it. Also consider taking group golf lessons rather than private lessons if you’re budget conscious.

Golfing Books and the Internet

Golf aids such as books or articles found in magazines or the internet provide a wealth of information on the proper golf swing. There are people who can apply what they’ve read translating it into motion on a golf course successfully. People who are more visual learners have a difficult time making much headway with this this type of instruction.

Be wary of random free articles you find on the internet since you get what you pay for and much of it can be quite conflicting. Your primary job is to determine which golf aids are best for you, ones that help you establish and improve your golf swing.

Once you’ve properly tuned your golf swing and gotten beyond the frustration, golf can be a fun and rewarding hobby.

Jack William Nicklaus, well known as “The Golden Bear,” was born on January 21, 1940 and may well be, as his fans will tell you, among the greatest pro golfers ever. Growing up in Columbus, Ohio, a pharmacist’s son, he was a student in Upper Arlington High School and beat a mild case of polio as a youth. Turning to golf at ten years old and shooting an amazing 51 for nine holes, he broke 70 at age 13 on eighteen holes.

As a junior player he won the Ohio Open in 1956 at sixteen years of age, the US Amateur twice (1959 and 1961), and an NCAA Championship in 1961. When Nicklaus played in the 1960 US Open he had a 282 and finished second behind golf great Arnold Palmer. He was also a part of and won the US Eisenhower Trophy with his team in 1960 with a four-round score of 269-this record still stands today.

By the close of 1961, Jack turned pro and in 1962, he played and won in one of his first major championship-The US Open. Beating Arnold Palmer, an achievement in itself, gave Nicklaus notice by fans and in 1966, he won the Masters Tournament for two consecutive years. He won the Open Championship as well in 1966, however, failed to win another until the Open Championship title again in 1970. During the years 1971-1980, he won nine major titles and overtook Bobby Jones’s record of thirteen titles. At 46 years of age, Jack won his 18th major championship, which was also his last, at the 1986 Masters Tournament-he was the oldest winner of this event.

He joined the Senior PGA Tour in 1990, where he racked up 10 wins by 1996 – eight of which were major tournament wins. His made his last Senior PGA tournament appearances in 2005. However, he has stayed active in the sport, writing on the subject, designing courses and even holding his own PGA tournament, the Memorial tournament. Hi runs one of the world’s leading golf course design firms and has written autobiographical titles as well as instructional works on playing the Nicklaus way.

Perhaps Nicklaus’ popularity came with golf’s popularity when he beat Arnold Palmer in 1962 at Oakmont in the US Open. With the emergence of television, Jack’s charisma, good looks, and true rivalry with Palmer attracted many viewers to golf-something they hadn’t seen before on TV. He won an unheard of prize money of $60,000 in 1962 and reached third place on the tour’s money list, and named Rookie of the Year. In 1963, one of his best years, he won the Masters and the PGA Championship.

In 1964, he won the British Open at St. Andrews and established a new record for lowest score in the last thirty-six holes-66-68. His Masters win in 1965 set a tourney record of 271-which stood until Tiger Woods shot 270 in 1997. In the 1968, The Golden Bear let his physical condition slip, which most felt affected his playing skills, but Jack improved in the fall of 1969 where he returned to top form. Sadly, he lost one of his biggest supporters and mentors, his father, Charlie Nicklaus in 1970.

Interviewed in 1970 after the death of his father, Nicklaus said: “I was playing good golf, but it really wasn’t that big a deal to me one way or the other. And then my father passed away and I sort of realized he had certainly lived his life through my golf game. I really hadn’t probably given him the best of that. So I sort of got myself back to work. So 1970 was an emotional one for me from that standpoint-it was a big boost.” Whatever the reason Nicklaus was certainly a record setter – he was the first player to win all four major tournaments twice in the course of his career.

In 1974, the PGA Player of the Year was given to Nicklaus for the third time and he was among the first to be inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame. In 1975, he won his fifth Masters and his fourth PGA Championship. ABC named him Wide World of Sports Athlete of the Year. Again, at the top of the money list in 1976, he played what he liked to call, “hang-back-and-hope golf.” In 1986, he won his sixth Masters-again and unbelievably was still going strong. His 1978 British Open win gave him a place in golf history where he won each major championship three times-a record finally tied by Tiger Woods in 2008. His Senior Tour wins include The Tradition (four times), the Senior Players Championship, and the US Senior Open. Along with his 100th career win (The Tradition) in 1996, he and his four sons and son-in-law had 299 courses open in 2005, an impressive 1% of all the courses in the world. Jack Nicklaus is The Golden Bear for record breaking, his playing style, and his off-the-course achievements and will remain one of golf’s greatest players of all time.

One of the most basic decisions in any job is choosing the proper tools, and golf is no exception. While the name on the driver might not affect how he swings, it definitely speaks to the quality of the tools he uses. Anyone who wants to play like Tiger Woods needs to choose the golf equipment that will distinguish himself from the amateur.

An amateur, who picked up golf as a hobby could easily notice the wide range of tools available at all possible places like specialty stores, pro shops, online or even at high-end customer retailers. So, it becomes a complicated job for the beginner to choose the best make and brand of the club.

If an amateur enters a pro shop he will be lost as there are so many choices. Obviously there are items available at a low cost that may be good for the beginner. Then there is certainly a lot of difference between tools used by amateur and those used by experts.

Within all the varieties of equipments used by a professional golfer the most ignored tool is the driver club. It is rightly said that “You get what you paid for” and this happens with the driving range also. It is the least used club as it is put in the basket after the first shot and is seldom used again, but a professional golf payer knows the importance of the driving club.

There are a number of companies that manufactures high quality drivers but the amateurs are recommended to go for the cheaper one as it will serve their purpose. But for a professional golfer, it really matters to know his tools. For an expert player the quality of the driver is far more important than the cost.

Some of the manufacturers are quite reputed for good quality of their products. Even the budget-priced tools of Mercedes-Benz are reputed to be of high class with respect to their engineering and reliability. This is true for all the brands which supplies golf accessories. It is well known to a professional player that only the reputed manufactures puts in the efforts to produce high quality equipments for the sake of its status.

The most reputed among the lot is Callaway Golf. aCallawaya is often associated with its history of manufacturing of high-quality equipments. And its reputation for producing durable, best quality tools is justified too as players in all international tournaments usually rely on Callaway Golf including Tiger Woods.

A good driver, if maintained well, should not require changing for dozens of years. In fact, most professionals will stick with one driver their entire career. Bearing this in mind, the key to purchasing the right professional driver is selecting a brand with a history of durability and a reputation for professional-quality gear.

If you are into golf, your children are probably going to want to try it once in a while. Children always want to emulate their parents, and that means they are going to find interest in all of the things that they see their parents doing. If the junior’s parents play golf, the children are going to show some interest in it. You can always take them to the mini golf range, but they are going to want to try the real thing. Start out by getting them a junior golf club set and then go from there.

When you first start your children out, you want to take them to a store, to get their junior golf club set. Make sure that they sell all types of junior golf equipment. The reason for this is that all children are different heights, obviously, and they all need different lengths. You can make sure they are getting clubs for their junior golf club set that fits their size so they can learn well. If they have the wrong sizes, they are not going to learn a good and natural swing, and that can mean they never adjust right as they grown. That can lead to frustration and a lack of interest in golf later on.

When my husband first got a junior golf clubs for my daughter, he did it one piece at a time. This is something that many moms and dads can do, especially if money is an issue. We got her a golf bag that was just her size, and then bought her just one club. The driver was the obvious choice as the first addition to the junior golf club set that she wanted so badly. That meant she had a bag like daddy, and could go learn to drive first. They went to the driving range together and were both very happy.

If this is something you would like to do for a junior golf club set, you can then do what my husband did next. He slowly bought her one club at a time, teaching her what it was and how to use it as they went along. She only has four at the present time, but she is getting good with each of them. She is young yet, but is very proud of her junior golf club set and cant wait to make more of it. However, the problem is now that she is getting a little taller and we may have to start all over again with a longer set of golf clubs.

You will find that this will be a problem for you when getting junior golf clubs also. If you have more than one child, you can simply pass them down the line. If you have just one, like we do, you may have to find a way to see what you can sell when you have to move up more sizes. If you dont care much about the price, you can always donate the junior golf club set that your child has outgrown to programs locally that get children involved in sports and physical education.

One of the questions that I think a lot of people would like to know is, how long will it take to fix my golf swing. Below, I have outlined the various methods. After reading them, it’s up to you to decide which approach you will take.

Swing Fix 1 – Buy New Clubs

One of the things everyone has tried at one time or another is to buy new clubs in the hopes that their game will change. Now, I don’t want to totally discount this fix because buying new clubs can improve your game if you’re playing the wrong clubs, or if your clubs are not properly fitted to you and your swing. The best thing you can do, is to seek out a professional clubfitter to have your swing checked and club professionally fitted to you.

Buying new clubs gives you a quick fix in another way. New clubs feel different from your current clubs. This means that when you hit shots with them, you’re thinking so much about how the new club feels that you aren’t thinking of how you’re swinging. This totally clears your mind but it’s only temporary. After a couple of weeks of using a new club(s), it no longer feels different so you go right back to thinking about your swing again. My advice here is to quit trying new clubs in search of the fix. As I said above, find a clubfitter and have your clubs professionally fitted. Then, work on your swing.

Swing Fix 2 – All Those Swing Tips

We’ve all grabbed the latest golf magazine and tried the latest tip with the hope it will magically change our game. Unfortunately, most golfers don’t have the experience to determine whether or not these tips will even work for them. If you don’t know your swing well enough, and you keep trying these tips, you may make your swing worse. Plus, a tip is a tip. It’s not certain that it’s going to help you develop the proper fundamentals.

An example of this would be to change to a stronger grip. Although this tip may cause the face to square better through impact, it isn’t the correct grip. Be very careful when you’re working on the latest tip in a golf magazine, or from your friend. A good idea would be to discuss the tip with your head pro or teaching pro first to see if it would be a good fit for your game. Then, and only then, would you attempt to try it. If it makes your swing better, great!

Swing Fix 3 – No Focus

The great majority of golfers are trying to find the miracle cure so they try to make way too many changes at the same time. This approach will never work. Unfortunately, this will be too confusing. Plus, you may end up trying so many different things that you forget what actually worked. Even if you had some success, it may have just been luck. The only way you truly know if this way of working on your swing is a success is if you see long term results.

Swing Fix 4 – Only Work on 1 Thing

The best way you should work on fixing your swing, is to take it one step at a time and work on one thing only. If you take this approach, you remain focused on that one thing therefore, you’ll not be experimenting. If you’re going to work on your swing this way, then you’re going to need a swing coach or a method to follow. By working on your swing this way, you solidify the changes because you are only focused on one thing at a time. I know, most golfers think this is going to take a long time. If you compare this way to the other fixes I described, you’ll make progress faster this way.

This is because the other approaches only give you a short term fix whereas, working on only only area of your swing, creates proper mechanics that you will have well into the future.

by Jay Stevenson

Golf has long been looked at as an elitist sport – something not everyone can enjoy. However, it is fast becoming popular and more and more people are taking this up as a sport. The increasing number of golf clubs, golf accessories, and learning instructions for those who wish to learn this sport only make it easier for anyone who desires to learn.

Golf is also often seen as a mundane sport – compared to other ball sports, that is. There is very little tension, no thumping heart, no BP rising or other such phenomena that seem to occur with sports such as baseball, basketball or football. As such, not many non-players will avidly watch the game. Nevertheless, understanding the terminology of the game, its rules and regulations and maybe trying it out once in a while will help one get an idea of what kind of a game it is.

Golf essentially is a game of stroke. The player uses a golf club made of iron, wood or steel to play the ball into any one of the (usually) eighteen holes on a ‘golf course’. In this sense, golf is different from all other ball games since its area is not determined. The golf course is usually spread over many acres and the design of each one is quite different. Often a large effort, planning and money is put into designing and maintaining golf courses and most of them are also becoming tourist attractions and places of leisure and relaxation.

Golf courses can have nine or eighteen holes, spread over a large area, as per its design. The player has to play the ball into each of the holes one by one, depending on the layout of the golf course. In a nine-hole course, the player has to play all the holes twice. The player starts with the first hole of the course and then proceeds to the next only after he’s played the hole successfully. It is essential that the ball be played only by striking it with the club and cannot be moved from a position that it is lying in. If you miss a hole and the ball ends up, for example, behind a bush, you have to play it from there (although bushes are very rare on a golf course).

The important aspect of golf is the swing, or the stroke. It might seem like a ridiculous idea for a game to some – keep hitting a ball until it drops into a hole – however, this is where players like Tiger Woods have made it big and popularized the game to the extent it is today. Because oftentimes the player can’t even see the hole, and only knows what area it might be in – one has to be very careful with their aim and swinging technique. Also, the vastness of a golf course makes it very difficult to estimate how much force one will really have to use. Golf can be thought of as carom in many ways; however due to having no contact with the ball, it is often difficult to determine how much force, applied in which direction will yield what kind of results on the ball. Even aspects like posture and the hand being used to tee-off matter a lot in getting a swing right.

Next time you head out to play golf, notice your golf swing. Is it close to perfect? Probably not, there is always room to improve your golf swing and mastering it is not an easy task. The general rule that all the golf books teach is to keep your drive off the inside of your front foot’s heel.

Keep this in mind but also make sure you don’t overlook the positioning of your golf ball. You must hit your golf ball during the upswing and not the downswing because the woods have a very low angle to the clubface ratio. This is why they need a little lift during the impact. This is something that is often overlooked.

Next time youre playing golf, have a friend watch your swing and tell you where your swing bottoms out. You can even try videotaping your golf swing. This will help you position your golf ball correctly. Follow these simple steps to help you get the perfect golf swing:

1. It is important to turn your body around to the right and then back and around to the left, without moving either way. So, in other words you have to turn from a fixed pivot.

2. You must keep your arms at full stretch during back/down swing and the follow through.

3. You have to allow the wrists to break fully back at the top of the swing.

4. You should try to hit the golf ball as late in your swing as possible.

5. Most people play golf to relax and enjoy themselves and its good because if you don’t relax then your muscles tighten up and your golf swing suffers.

6. And the last step goes along with the previous step. Relax and control the swing as a whole. Try not to concentrate on one part of the swing but look at the swing as a whole.

Implement all the above the steps and you will be the one all your friends envy. But it is important to keep in mind the very last step. You can do all the other steps correctly but if your shot doesnt flow then the proper results wont be achieved.

As long as you follow these rules, you will be good. Make sure you visit my blog regularly to get more tips and finally achieve your goal of having an unbeatable golf swing.

Do you play a mean game of golf (or do you just wish you did)? You may have your own favorite fairway, of course, but one of the great places to try playing your game in a new setting is in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Myrtle Beach, known as the “golf city of the world,” has miles and miles of lush green fairway for you to try your hand on.

In the Myrtle Beach area, you can try out at least 120 different golf courses within about a 60-mile area. Myrtle Beach has both great golf courses and great beach areas. If you choose the Myrtle Beach as your vacation spot, you’re among good company. At least 14 million people yearly visit the Myrtle Beach area. In fact, those who golf say that its courses and greens are challenging and can be a great way to learn if you play golf yourself. Architects have landscaped and designed the various golf course layouts in Myrtle Beach to be functional and beautiful. The Myrtle Beach tournaments are also played at one of the many gorgeous golf courses. Golfing exhibitions, too, are held in the Myrtle Beach area for charity.

One recent study found that Myrtle Beach was among the top golf course areas in the world. In fact, its five-star rating (out of a possible five) isn’t surprising, given that it’s so obviously focuses on the golf world.

You can also find testimonials from those who’ve played Myrtle Beach’s golf courses to see just how great they are before you travel there to play yourself. And if you’re not interested in golfing (or have just played a great game and are ready for other pursuits), there are many family oriented attractions around the courses. You can sunbathe on the beach, surf, or watch the boats on the horizon, to name just a few things you can do in Myrtle Beach.

In addition, Myrtle Beach has something for everyone in its dining experiences, attractions, and shops. If you decide to vacation here, you won’t be disappointed. Your visit will give you fond memories for years to come.

In addition to the aforementioned benefits, Myrtle Beach also prides itself on its posh hotels and resorts. There are many fine accommodations available here. If you bring your family to Myrtle Beach, your children, too, won’t be disappointed in what they find there. Myrtle Beach has attractions suitable for the whole family, not just for adults or for those who are avid golfers.

If you’re interested in traveling to Myrtle Beach, consult a travel agency in your area or go online to research the many package deals available. Some package deals or websites are targeted more for golf lovers, while others have more broad-based appeal. Myrtle Beach also has many places available where you can buy or rent golf equipment, assuming you don’t bring your own.

Of course, Myrtle Beach is definitely attractive to golfers, but it’s got so much more. It hosts many events geared to nongolfers, too. It has gorgeous accommodations, breathtaking scenery, and events meant to attract travelers of every persuasion — golf lovers or not. Give Myrtle Beach a try, and see for yourself.

If you frequent courses in the Northeast or Southeast, you’ve no doubt experienced rainy days. Lots of rainy days. And if you’re like me, you don’t let that get you down!

The good news for us weather never-minding golf fanatics is that there any products available to keep our heads dry and our swing unencumbered. The bad news is it can be quite expensive to shop for, if one is unwary. Worry not, though! Golf Guru Guy is on the job, and I’ve got quite the selection for you in our rain gear section.

The obvious items a golfer in the rain needs are a good raincoat and hat. The best fabric is made of Gore-tex, but it Aint cheap. The coat alone could cost you hundreds, with the bucket hats not much cheaper (You think they would get an ugliness discount, but no). Weve seen coats going for as low as $129 that are up to the challenge, as well as some goats. Now, following is a list of a few other items you will need.

The Golf Bag: Your golf bag should have a good rain cover that keeps your whole bag dry, not just the clubs. Trying to keep your bag dry in a down pour is not easy, which it is imperative to invest in a solid Golf Bag that does not have pockets facing up where water can enter. Man, it really stinks when your cell phone and wallet get soaked because your bags pockets had more holes in them that Swiss cheese!!!

Fancy Globes for Fancy Men! Those leather gloves of yours may be fine dandy when its dry, Mr. Fancy Pant, but in the rain they become a liability. Once soaked, your grip will be ruined. To prevent you from sending your sand wedge out of the trap with the ball (Just wanted to make sure the ball didnt get any ideas! Right), a pair of rain gloves will go a long way. They grip better the more waterlogged they are, so youll be praying for a monsoon!

Wet Shoes for Dry Feet: Golf shoes that are waterproof are priceless (Though we still managed to find a few good deals for you), as they keep your feet dry and they’re usually guaranteed, to boot! So, even if they do get wet, you’re covered. Just keep the receipt! As your Vietnam veteran golf buddies will tell you, “Keep your feet dry.” Be sure to invest in more than one pair to make sure the shoes have time to dry between rounds, and bring extra socks! Lieutenant Dan will tell you that there’s no such thing as too many socks!

Wind-Proof Umbrellas: Durable golf umbrellas are a must for players seriously considering braving the storm. What better way to keep your equipment dry than to not let it get wet the first place? If youre going to get one, be sure it has vents on the top to keep it from inverting at the worst possible moment.

Well, you can go nuts, but these are the essentials you need to keep that great round going, no matter what Mother Nature has in store for your round Decent golf rain gear is essential if like me, youre mad for golf and play all year round.

If you think it is a hard task to shop for the male figures in your life, whether it is your dad, son, long lost family member or close friend, you might think about a gift basket with golf gifts in it. This gift is very personable for special interests and you can give this gift anytime of the year.

Want to create the perfect birthday gift for someone and think they would enjoy getting a golf gift basket? This is a creative and wonderful gift that will leave every golf lover smiling; there are several sites that allow you to create your own customized gift baskets. You can fill it with things you know that special person will like, personalized golf balls, tees, perhaps a new golf outfit, if you can think of it, then you can make it part of this special gift.

Many women worry that they don’t know if they can find romantic gifts for men. Of course, you can find a romantic gift. You can make your own gift basket for a weekend of golf. You can buy a gift certificate for him to play free golf games at his favorite golf course. Also you can make hotel reservations and plans to eat dinner. All of this shows that you are thinking of him with love and romance. Your man will thank you for this.

It can be hard to think of a get well gift for your guy. Chocolates and roses don’t usually work. A good choice for golfers is a gift basket of golfing supplies. You can put in small golf accessories like club covers, gloves, gift certificates for the local driving range, as well as a card with a golf design on the cover. This costs about the same as what roses would, but it will be something he is happy about, and will appreciate when he gets better.

If you have an idea for a golf gift basket as a gift but you aren’t creative or don’t have the time to make one yourself, there are many places that can help you create the perfect basket. Look online at different florist, you will find that many have several different options for you to choose from and many can be delivered on the same day. If you are still not able to find something you like then check for specialty stores that create gift baskets to order.

Regardless of your budget, it is possible to create a memorable and personalized gift for the special man in your life with golf gift baskets. Your gift will help you show your man that you know him and it will definitely be remembered for a long time.
