Deer Hunting Tips – What Conditions Affect Antler Size?
Sometimes, the most useful deer hunting tips have to do with herd management. To prize hunters, the goal is to harvest a deer with big antlers. We aspire to one day get that huge rack. All of us hear about and tell each other tales of huge antlers; points, spread, diameter, length of tine… However, do you know what really makes a difference in regards to antler size?
There are three main things that can influence buck antler size:
1. Genetics
2. Nutrition
3. Age
Genetics determine how big the antlers might become. All experienced game managers or deer hunters know what is scientific truth: maximum antler size is largely determined by genetics. Sometimes, the best managed leases impose limits on how big an antler can be if it’s to be harvested. A limit is put each season on genetically desirable prey and killing of genetically inferior antlered deer lets the gene pool move towards more favorable traits. Although there is some doubt regarding the benefit of these practices (effective killing of inferior antlered deer is sometimes impossible given the harvest rates to population in general), it has a genuinely good motive.
Nutrition or what a deer has to eat is another factor affecting the size of a deers antlers. Even if a deer has superior genetics, when there are not enough nutrients available for the deer to eat, the antlers will never reach their full size. Experienced hunters will tell you about seasons when drought caused foliage and food sources to be scarce. They will also attest how these conditions made it impossible to find any deer with huge racks. In order for deer to reach their full antler producing potential, they need adequate nutrition throughout the entire year. Due to the fact that most of the antler growth occurs during the spring and summer time, nutrition through this period is the most important. This means that when foraging conditions are poor during the spring and summer months, antler growth will be limited. However, if time and energy are put into habitat management, adequate nutrition and foraging will be made more likely. There are many times that supplemental feeding is needed.
The final factor is age, however research suggests that once a buck has reached 3+ years of age genetics and nutrition play a larger part in antler growth. The size of the antler tends to increase greatly during the first few years of age and then to level off sometime between the fourth to sixth year depending on the breed and its genetics. For this reason, the harvesting of bucks younger than 4 years is not encouraged. The practice by insensitive hunters of culling bucks that are too young can lead to such colorful expressions from more experienced hunters as, “That deer still had milk on its breath.” It is best overall to harvest only the mature bucks. If you are in need of venison and a mature buck is not in evidence then harvest a doe. The hunt next season will reap the benefit.

What to Consider When Picking Boats and Kayaks
To pick the best boats and kayaks, you have to consider several things. Primarily, you have to identify your needs and preference. Since not all vessels are the same, picking just the right one for you can be tough. Here are a few options that you might want to think over.
Rigid vs. Soft
Some kayaks are made of soft fabric. They can also come in more traditional rigid materials like fiberglass, plastic and wood. Some prefer rigid shells and hulls because they naturally give the impression of durability and strength. On the other hand, some may be afraid of riding soft shells because they imagine that these vessels are more susceptible to punctures. Depending on your boat brand however, soft shells can be very durable.
Of course, not just any fabric will do for soft boats. The fabric used for them are usually of a tempered kind. Some boats also use layered fabric and pressure sealed seams to ensure boat strength. Inflatable soft boats are therefore good options too. Moreover, they are perfect for individuals on a tight budget since they cost less than hard shells.
Portable vs. Non-Portable
Portability is another thing to consider. Like other large equipment, boats and kayaks now have portable versions. Portable inflatable units are perfect for people who like to travel far to water sites or who do not have appropriate land transportation for moving boats and kayaks. Some inflatable units are so easy and convenient to use that they can be carried using carry bags and can be fully inflated in minutes for instant use. Portable units are also perfect for people who do not have large storage spaces. Portable boats can be dried, deflated and stored on a bag or shelf.
Portable units though, are not for everyone. Some people may still feel more comfortable with non-portable rigid boats. That will not be a problem if you have the same preference. You just have to make sure that you have sufficient storage area, proper maintenance tools and appropriate boat or kayak transportation.
Multi-Purpose vs. Single Purpose
Many kayaks and boats can be used for a variety of purposes. Some tenders for example can be used for mild sport racing or leisure paddling. Some kayak models too can be used for riding the rapids, fishing and plain paddling. You can opt to have a multi-purpose vessel or you can go for a single purpose type.
If you have other outdoor water hobbies aside from plain kayaking, a multi-purpose vessel is the best option. You might have a number of different water hobbies that you would like to pursue. Hence, you need a boat that can cope with your many different activities. Some individuals though may prefer single purpose vessels simply because these are specifically constructed for a particular activity that they might want to excel in. High end kayaks for example are almost always the vessel of choice for riding class IV rapids.
These outdoor water equipment or vessel come in various shapes and sizes. Choose yours carefully based on these basic considerations.

Whitetail Deer Hunting Tips For Beginners
Hunting for whitetail deer is a favorite hunting sport globally, with a growing number of people involved each year. For a beginning whitetail deer hunter it can be somewhat tough. Some tips and antics about this enterprise are helpful in order to depart with confidence. If you can be accompanied by a mentor for your initial hunting experience, it will be more gratifying.
Experienced hunters recommend checking the hunting equipment when going into the stand, not later when a buck eventually walks out. Check if your scope is clear, the shells in the chamber or if you use a bow, check if your bow will draw back properly. Make sure you are familiar with your gear and your rifle or bow.
If you are going to hunt whitetail deer in a food plot or a wide field it is advisable to do it in the evening or after daylight. Understand that deer opt for dense protection so it is most advantageous to try to create a path through the cover that you think these animals might use. The whitetail deer typically selects the most comfortable routes available. Once you have set up a path, hunt over the determined path from a hunting tree stand.
The smartest advice is to hunt each time you get the opportunity. Experience is substantial; only by going out there in the wilderness you will become familiarized with their habitat, eating habits and other features that will make you a champion hunter. Time spent hunting, and time spent with a seasoned hunter will increase the probablility of success and enjoyment of your hunt.
When you are about to hunt in a new area, it is sensible to hunt at a new stand each day for a short time period because this is the most effective way to learn about the deer movement paths. If you see a deer and shoot it, and subsequently you relocate a brief distance from the position you have made the shot, it is wise to stand back and give it time to take its last breath. If you shot it during the late hours of the day it is advisable to wait until the following day.
If you plan on hunting whitetail deer with a bow, master hunters advocate doing it from a tree stand because it is a lot more effective equated to hunting from ground level. Another tip is to use just one pin, because it is more effortless to point high or low on the whitetail deer than to try to remember to use a specific one when the big one walks out.
We hope that our hints will be helpful, and that during your first efforts to hunt these animals you will get decent outcomes. Remember– practice each time you have the chance. Enjoy the extraordinary outdoors, and the treasured family custom of hunting.
